Stefna offers DNS services for websites hosted by Stefna.

In a nutshell

  • DNS tells where websites (and other services) are hosted.
  • DNS changes need to be made when a new website is launched.
  • Stefna offers DNS hosting with websites hosted at Stefna.
  • Hosting a domain on Stefna's DNS servers speeds up DNS changes that need to be made, because then you don't have to go through a third party.

DNS

DNS (Domain Name System) or name servers in Icelandic tell which domain name (such as stefna.is) points to. That is, which server the relevant service (eg website, email) is on.


When a new website is launched, in almost all cases, the name servers (DNS) need to be updated in accordance with the new website.


TTL (Time to live)

When making DNS changes, they can take a while to take effect, this time is called the TTL or time to live of the DNS record. The TTL for each domain is defined on the relevant name server and can vary depending on the configuration, it is normal for the TTL to be set to 24 hours for a domain and therefore it will take 24 hours for the DNS change to take effect.


To speed things up, it is advisable to lower the TTL to 15 minutes, whether DNS will be hosted by Stefna or not.


Therefore, it is a good idea to resolve DNS technical issues in a timely manner before the website goes live.


DNS at Stefna

Stefna offers DNS services with all websites hosted by Stefna. Hosting a domain on Stefna's DNS servers can speed up DNS changes because they don't have to go through a third party.


Third-party DNS

There is often a reason to host DNS elsewhere, whether it is with a third party or within a company. It is therefore a good idea to let Stefna's customer service representative or another Stefna contact know, so that we can work from there.


ISNIC

Technical contact

All Icelandic domains (.is) are registered with isnic.is. In order for the domain owner not to have to deal with too many technical issues, it is possible to define a Technical Contact on isnic.is for the domain in question. This allows that contact to deal with technical issues of the domain in question.


Strategy as a technical liaison

In order to make Stefna a technical contact, you need:

  1. Log in to isnic.is
  2. Select the desired domain (under "My Site")
  3. Click the "Edit" button under Contacts
  4. Click the Edit Domain Registration button
  5. Enter Stefna's NIC ID (SE501-IS) under Technical Contact
